2 Yankees fans who interfered with Mookie Betts' catch were ejected from Game 5 of the World Series

Two New York Yankees fans were ejected from Wednesday night's World Series game in the Bronx after they entered the field and interfered with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts.

In the first inning of Game 4 on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, Betts sprinted into the foul ground and caught a popup before a fan in a gray Yankees road jersey reached out and tried to pry the ball from the right fielder's glove.

Then another fan wearing sunglasses and a pinstripe jersey grabbed Betts' right wrist as the player tried to attach the ball and glove to his left hand.

The pair threw the ball loose, but the umpires immediately ruled out Yankees hitter Gleyber Torres and fans in the front row were ejected.

“Last night, two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium for egregious and unacceptable physical contact with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts,” the Yankees said in a statement Wednesday. “The safety of players, fans and stadium staff is the fundamental element of everything.” The event will take place at Yankee Stadium and no compromises can be made.

The Yankees won Game 4 11-4 and Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:08 p.m. ET.

Los Angeles leads the best-of-7 series 3-1, and Wednesday night's game in the Bronx will be the Yankees' final home game of 2024.

“Tonight is the last home game of the year and we want all the passion of our fans to be on display. Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, but the exuberance of supporting your team can never result in intentionally attacking players at physical risk,” the club said.

“The Yankees and Major League Baseball have a zero-tolerance policy toward the type of behavior exhibited last night. These fans will not be allowed to attend tonight’s game in any way.”
