Washington Commanders Kliff Kingsbury next head coach of the Florida Gators?

2 minutes, 14 seconds Read

Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has been considered one of the most offensive coaches in the game since his time as head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Since his college coaching days, Kingsbury spent time as an NFL head coach with the Cardinals before returning to the collegiate level at USC and now working as the Commanders' offensive coordinator.

Kliff has fought back after nearly being cut from coaching, but has now found himself in a great situation to help rebuild Washington's offense with a second-round quarterback who is viewed as the man of the future.

Despite having everything in his hands and complete control of the offense, Kingsbury's name is already cropping up in the rumor mill as a possible candidate for the head coaching position. In a recent development, Kingsbury's name has been mentioned as a top candidate for the Florida Gators head coaching position if or when their current head coach Billy Napier is fired or dismissed.

The firing of Napier seems imminent at this point. It's only a matter of time, as there is no obvious replacement for Napier on the current team and so it's likely the decision could come late in the season. Florida hasn't had much coaching success since the days when Urban Meyer led the program to national championships, having gone through players like Will Muschamp, Jim McElwain and Dan Mullen.

It's easy to see why Kingsbury's name would be thrown into play for a job like the University of Florida's. He's still young and has a creative offensive mentality that makes him difficult to stop. Kingsbury has had most of his success at the college level, not so much in the NFL.

However, it's hard to imagine Kingsbury leaving his current position to coach Jayden Daniels and having full autonomy over the offense and how it operates to get the organization back to where it should be. Not to mention, the college game has changed drastically since Kingsbury was in charge of a program, and it remains to be seen if he would be willing to deal with the monsters of the transfer portal and the name, image and likeness — as we've seen a handful of college coaches move on to NFL opportunities because of those challenges.
