FORECAST: Record-breaking heat wave!

2 minutes, 16 seconds Read

PHOENIX – High pressure is building up and causing temperatures to skyrocket!

A Excessive heat warning now applies to the valley until Sunday, 8:00 p.m.

We are in ABC15 weather action mode as a reminder to take action in these dangerously hot temperatures. Stay hydrated, limit time outside in the afternoon, and never leave children or pets in the car, no matter how quickly the errand needs to be run.

This heat wave is unprecedented and breaking all records! Previously, the last 110-degree day ever recorded in Phoenix was September 19, 2010. That date is now September 25, 2024, and we will likely push that date further back as every day will be 110 degrees until at least Tuesday of next week could reach hotter.

Sky Harbor rose to 113 degrees Wednesday afternoon, breaking the previous record of 108 set in 1989.

We will continue to see highs between 110 and 114 degrees over the next few days, breaking records every day through early next week.

As our nights get longer, we don't expect 90 degree lows. Nighttime temperatures will drop to the low to mid 80s across the valley, but even those temperatures are exceptionally warm for this time of year and could set new daily records.

Temperatures will gradually fall next week, but triple digits are still forecast for the first week of October.

Our drought has worsened in recent months due to the hotter and drier monsoon we have been experiencing. There is less than a week left until the monsoon season officially ends on September 30th, and our chance of rain is slim to none across Arizona.

So far this monsoon season, Phoenix has only received 0.74 inches of rain. Our 30-year average (which is considered our normal rainfall amount) is 2.43 inches. However, it is important to remember that this represents a decrease from the previous 30-year average of 2.71 inches (from 1981 to 2010) as the climate in our valley continues to become hotter and drier.
