MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Heavy rain and occasional gusty winds will continue across eastern Alabama early this morning; An additional 3 to 5 inches of rainfall is expected and flash flooding could occur in some eastern parts of the state. The highest risk is approximately east of US 231.

We are seeing wind gusts in the 25-35 mph range so far; This could lead to isolated power outages. This will be the exception, not the rule.

To the east, Florida and Georgia are bearing the brunt of the storm.

Catastrophic storm surges occurred along the Big Bend in Florida. Thanks to this powerful Category 4 storm, there was widespread wind damage and power outages stretching from the Florida coast to Tallahassee, Albany, Macon, Atlanta and the mountains of northern Georgia.

Helene will move rapidly north of the area through Friday and into the weekend, meaning rainfall levels will decrease significantly through Friday night and into Saturday and Sunday. This means that while the weekend plans are not completely dry, they will be better than what we are currently pursuing.

Expect sun and clouds Friday through Sunday, with afternoon highs in the 80s, a light breeze, low chances of rain around 10% and overnight lows in the 60s.
