Machine Gun Kelly recalls the motivation behind his sobriety

Machine Gun Kelly takes a trip down memory lane after completing a year of sobriety.

The 34-year-old rocker spoke to the press on Thursday night ahead of the 2024 People's Choice Country Awards, where he was both a nominee and a performer.

As MGK soberly reflected on his year-long progress, he shared the inspiration behind his big push for his upcoming journey.

“I had to zoom out and look at myself from a holistic perspective,” he said People on Thursday at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville.

“I was born on the 22nd. Twenty-two is a master number. What am I supposed to master here? I had to ask myself that question,” said Kelly, whose real name is Colson Baker.

The musician went on to explain what areas he wanted to work on during his sobriety.

“What were my intergenerational curses and problems that were passed down to me and my father? Rest in peace.”

MGK added that the idea of “doing his job to be a good man” kept him going.

“I find comfort in knowing that I can punish myself today so I can forgive myself tomorrow,” Kelly told the outlet.

“I have a daughter who I love with all my heart and would die for. And I have a beautiful family and a beautiful circle of friends and a beautiful life to live for. And I'm no longer in the despair of not realizing it.”

This isn't the first time he's spoken openly about working on his mental health and his battle with addiction, as he claimed to be “completely sober from everything” last August.

“I don't drink anymore. I haven't had a drink since last August. That was the first time I went to rehab,” Kelly said during an appearance on the Bunnie Xo podcast Stupid blonde.
