Due to the flash flood warning, several streets in Petersburg are flooded

1 minute, 24 seconds Read

According to the city, the following roads in Petersburg are closed today due to flooding and should be avoided:

  • The 800 block of E. Bank Street
  • Third Street and Joseph Jenkins
  • River Street and Third Street
  • E. Bank Street and Madison Street
  • Bollingbrook Street and N. Crater Road

This flooding is accompanied by a flash flood warning that has been issued for the Tri-City area until at least 11 a.m

The warning covers flash flooding of small streams and creeks, urban areas, highways, streets and subways, and other poorly drained and low-lying areas.

Citizens are asked to exercise caution during heavy rain and flooding:

  • Do not walk, swim or drive through floodwaters. Six inches of fast-moving water can knock you over, and two feet can levitate a car. NEVER drive around barricades, especially those with flood and road closure signs.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. If you find yourself on a flooded road with rapidly rising water, exit the car quickly and drive to higher ground.
  • Do not walk along streams or river banks.
  • Do not allow children or pets to play in or near floodwater. Downed power lines can lead to, among other things, electric shocks.
  • Avoid all contact with flood water. It may be contaminated with harmful chemicals and debris that are not visible from the surface.
  • Stay away from flood-prone areas. Underpasses, depressions, low spots, etc. can quickly fill with water.

To report flooded areas or concerns, please call the Petersburg Police non-emergency number: 804-732-4222. Call 911 for all emergencies, including emergencies that require you to leave your home due to flooding. For all power outages, call Dominion at 866-366-4357.
