Never Let Go had promise, but I'm tired of the bad Hollywood endings

Full spoilers for Never let go consequences.

Never let go is the latest film from hit production company Lionsgate, a studio known for the massive horror franchise Seen, as well as popular action franchises The Hunger Games And John Wick (for which there was recently a trailer ballerina). Although it was a scary survival horror hit that had a similar vibe A quiet placeHe had potential, but he really ran out of steam in the third act.

It's annoying that this seems to happen a lot with new films. Although I'm not entirely against puzzles and questions, I sometimes feel like the script was missing something and the result could leave the audience disappointed and hungry for something they'll never get. That was definitely the case never let go, which teased this big, bad threat and then fizzled out at the very end.

Movies shouldn't have to explain too much what's going on, but it's nice if they do teach us something something to work with. For me, Never let go was so ambiguous that it was frustrating and left me with more questions than I originally had, which is never a good sign.

Evil, simply called “The Evil,” is this seemingly great threat that has taken over the world and (even) left Mom behind she (has no name) and her two boys as the only survivors. In the end we realize it's a lie, and it literally doesn't go any further than that. The boys go to the civilization from which they have been protected all their lives, and that's it. We don't find out what it is, whether it all happened in her mother's head or whether it's a demonic figure living isolated in her remote cabin.

The boys couldn't see Evil, but it still doesn't answer why it's been so central to their lives for all these years. A lot of things didn't fit and despite the good acting and the creepy atmosphere, the story was lacking compared to the best horror films.

Should we avoid ambiguous endings entirely?

No, not completebut they seem to occur in abundance and the result is not always good. But as we've seen throughout film history, it can be done very well. Take a look beginning – one of Christopher Nolan’s best films – and its now iconic totem ending. We'll never find out whether Cobb was in the real world or not, but given the wealth of hours leading up to that final shot, the ending is unforgettable. Definitely frustrating, but that's how it is Great.

Never let go could not reach these heights because we initially knew little about the threat. There was little to grab the audience, I was more prepared for another jump scare where Mom would see another manifestation of evil, but that had more to do with loud audio than fear of the antagonist. I don't actually care if I know Nothing about what scares me in the first place. Building lore is important.

Endings are tricky, but a lot of big budget films really struggle to stick the landing. A prime example of this is the abyssality of Lionsgate border areas, which offended video game fans everywhere and then led to an unsatisfactory outcome. Not ambiguous, just boring. It's not all doom and gloom though, 2024 has seen a lot of great films and A24 in particular is up there with recent films like I saw the television light up And MaXXXineone of five A24 films I couldn't wait to see in 2024 – and both made the all-important finale. I just wish the bigger names would follow suit.
