Mountaineers win third straight at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 4 West Virginia University men's soccer team won its third straight game on Friday and remained undefeated this season with a 4-2 victory at Georgia Southern. The Mountaineers improve to 8-0-3 overall and 3-0-1 in the Sun Belt, while the Eagles fall to 5-2-3 and 1-1-1 in conference play.

Junior Marcus Caldeira scored a brace and scored goals early in the first and second half. PhD student Sergio Ors Navarro scored his nation's best 11Th Goal of the season while also adding his first two assists of the season. The newcomer scored the last goal Isaac Scheerthe first of his career.

A trio of Mountaineers reached milestones that night as Caldeira and Ors Navarro each surpassed 50 career points as head coaches Dan Stratford earned his 50Th Victory as West Virginia head coach.

Overall, WVU beat Georgia Southern 14:11, while there were even six shots on goal. Each team took three corners, while both teams committed eleven fouls in the even game.

Caldeira scored the first goal in the 6th roundTh minute and shot the ball into the penalty area after a low cross from Ors Navarro. A few moments later in the 10thTh In the minute, Ors Navarro received a pass from the senior Frederik Jorgensen before blasting his shot past the goalie, doubling the Mountaineer's lead.

Georgia Southern scored in the 27th minuteTh Minute. The Eagles nearly tied the game after a corner kick before halftime, but redshirt senior Marc Bonnaire made one of his best four saves of the season to keep WVU on top.

In the second half, Caldeira needed just 41 seconds to extend the Mountaineer's lead by curling a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper and into the side netting.

The Eagles got back to within one point in the 64th minuteTh minute, but Scheer responded in the 69thTh minute and threw a rebound into the open net.

The Mountaineer defense only allowed three shots in the final 20 minutes, none of which were on target, to secure the away win.

West Virginia will remain on the road for its next contest at Dayton on Tuesday, Oct. 15, the final non-conference game of the season. Kick-off at Baujan Field is scheduled for 7:00 p.m
