The Jets are giving disgruntled Haason Reddick a chance to pursue the trade

Haason Reddick could be on the move without ever playing for the Jets.

According to multiple reports, the Jets have given Reddick permission to seek a trade, and according to The Athletic, new agent Drew Rosenhaus has been in contact with teams in the last 12 hours.

This is a significant change in the Jets' stance from August, when the Jets said they would not trade him after the star pass rusher requested his transfer.

“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates and that he will continue to be fined under the (collective bargaining agreement) if he does not report,” said Joe Douglas, general manager of the Jets said in a statement at the time. “We have been clear, direct and consistent in our position since the trade talks in March.”

The Jets acquired Reddick from the Eagles this offseason, but he has not reported to the team due to a lack of a multi-year extension.

Reddick has one year left on his contract, a base salary of $14.25 million, and has accumulated more than $9 million in fines due to his absence.

With the season now six weeks old and the Jets sitting at 2-4 after a tough home loss to the Bills on Monday, it's possible the Jets are trying to recoup at least some draft compensation, or perhaps because there are no serious offers present, Reddick will show that his best option is to report to the Jets.

The Jets also have reduced draft compensation as of Tuesday morning after trading a conditional third-round pick that could become a second-rounder for star Raiders receiver Dantate Adams.

The Jets traded a conditional 2026 third-round pick to sign Reddick.

Jets owner Woody Johnson recently implored the former Temple star to show up.

“I hope the young man can join the team, we would like to have Haason here. “We would welcome him with open arms,” Johnson said after firing Robert Saleh. “When he gets here he will find a very welcome locker room and will be able to fit in well, but he has to get here first.

“Haason, get in your car, drive down 95 and get to the New York Jets. We can meet you and escort you straight into the building and you will fit in well, you will like it here and you will feel welcome. With us you will achieve great things.”

The other interesting wrinkle is how this change comes about after Reddick recently hired Rosenhaus, one of the NFL's top agents, after his previous agency, CAA, left him due to its contract crisis.

Rosenhaus said Reddick would like to play for the Jets, although it appears the door is now open for him to make his debut with another team in 2024.

“We are focused on finding a solution with the Jets,” Rosenhaus told the Post’s Brian Costello on Monday.
