ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB/Atlanta News First) – One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting on the Albany State University campus Saturday night, officials said.

Officials said the shooting occurred near the student union at the school's East Campus just before 9 p.m.

Police have not identified any suspects or announced any arrests. The deceased victim has not been identified. Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler said Saturday he received a call about a male victim who died from his injuries.

Albany Police Chief Michael Persley said authorities did not know a motive for the shooting, which occurred as the school celebrated its homecoming weekend.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was called in to take over the case from school and city police.

The university's interim president, Lawrence M. Drake II, released the following statement regarding the shooting:

The Albany State University family is deeply saddened to learn of an incident that occurred on campus on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at approximately 8:50 p.m. As always, the safety of our ASU students, faculty and staff is a priority of this institution.

We're told six people sustained injuries. Unfortunately, one of them was reported deceased. The GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) is leading the investigation and is being assisted by state and local authorities. Updates will be provided as information becomes available.
