The victories of Manchester City and Liverpool on Wednesday evening completed the English teams' clean sweep of the Champions League on matchday three.

Pep Guardiola's side claimed a 5-0 win over Sparta Prague, while the Reds wiped out the threat from their hosts RB Leipzig to claim a 1-0 victory in Germany. A day earlier, both Aston Villa and Arsenal had secured victories over Bologna and Shakhtar Donetsk respectively.

Midweek results show three Premier League teams at the top of the revamped Champions League table, with Unai Emery's side topping the table thanks to their better goal difference over Liverpool.

The Midlands club and the Reds are the only two teams in this year's competition with a 100 per cent record, while City are the best team with seven points.

Like Villa, the 2023 winners have yet to concede a goal in the competition this season. Arsenal, in ninth place, is another team with a perfect defensive record, alongside Inter Milan and Atalanta.

In fact, the only player to score against an English side in this competition so far is former Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic, who scored for AC Milan in their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool last month.

The league phase, introduced for the first time this season, sees all 36 teams listed in a table, with the top eight teams advancing to the round of 16 after eight games.

The teams placed ninth through 24th will be drawn together in a play-off, with the winners advancing to automatic qualification in the next round.

The Premier League team's strong performance so far is also underlined by their unbeaten record. Of the nine teams that have not yet lost this competition, four come from the top English league.

The only other nations to have at least two unbeaten clubs are France – with surprise two debutants Monaco and Champions League Brest – and Italy.

Bayer Leverkusen, Inter, Atalanta and Sporting CP are the other teams yet to taste defeat in Europe this season.

In the next round of games on November 5th and 6th, City travel to Portugal to face Sporting, while Liverpool welcome their former player Xabi Alonso and his Leverkusen team to Anfield.

Villa, meanwhile, will be confident of maintaining their perfect start when they face Cub Brugge in Belgium, while Arsenal face their toughest test with a trip to San Siro against Serie A champions Inter.
