Arne Slot is “proud” of the record-breaking start in Liverpool

Arne Slot says he is proud of Liverpool's record-breaking start to his tenure – but insists what really matters to him is winning trophies.

Wednesday's 1-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League means Liverpool have won 11 of their first 12 games in a season for the first time in the club's history.

It is also the first time that a Liverpool team has won six consecutive away games at the start of a season.

“We should be proud because so many great teams have worn this jersey and there have been so many great managers at the club. Achieving something that has never been achieved before is almost impossible and always beautiful,” Slot said.

“But there is something much nicer than records, and you know what I mean by that – trophies.”

Darwin Nunez's first-half goal was enough to secure maximum points at the Red Bull Arena, with Liverpool in control for long periods before putting some pressure on towards the end.

“I don't think we started the game very well, but after the first 15 minutes I liked a lot of what I saw,” Slot added.

“We played through their pressing and opened up a lot of attacks, which led to the first goal and many more chances. It's a shame that at the end of a game like this, big roles are required of the two central defenders and the goalkeeper. A game like that should have been ours after 60 to 70 minutes.

“It’s nice to see all of our players scoring points. Beforehand, Cody (Gakpo) and Mo (Salah) were just as important as Darwin. But Darwin was strong, confident on the ball, fought when he had to defend and he made things very difficult for Leipzig's two central defenders.

“When you play against a big team away from home, they will always have moments. I liked that we had total dominance in this game, like in all other games except Chelsea. After Chelsea I was more worried. I much prefer to see my team play like that. We had a lot more possession of the ball.”

Slot revealed Salah was sent off just after the hour mark because he only had one eye on Sunday's crucial Premier League clash at Arsenal.

“It’s a tough schedule. It was the same with Curtis Jones, he hasn’t played 90 minutes yet,” he added.

“We have some injuries now so I have to look after the players. There’s a big game on Sunday and I need to use as many players as possible for these difficult months.”
