Joe Davis honors Vin Scully by calling Freddie Freeman's Grand Slam

Joe Davis honored one of baseball's all-time great announcers in the most fitting way Friday night.

When Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam against the Yankees in the bottom of the 10th inning of Game 1 of the World Series, Davis, the Fox play-by-play man, paid tribute to Vin Scully – the former Dodgers and NBC Baseball Network – His Tribute.

“Freeman hits a ball, right field – she’s…. gone! Gibby, this is Freddie! Game 1 of the World Series,” Davis said on the call.

Scully, who provided many great World Series moments throughout his legendary career, used the phrase “She's gone!” when Dodgers star Kirk Gibson made the legendary slugfest in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series against A's closer Dennis Eckersley.

Before the game began, Fox aired a segment featuring Scully's voice from 2010 that aired on Prime Ticket and was an ode to the rivalry between the Yankees and Dodgers.

Since it was the same team and almost the same Dodger Stadium location, the parallels were easy to see.

Additionally, there was another striking similarity between Freeman and Gibson.

Like Gibson in 1988, Freeman struggled with injury during that postseason run, particularly an ankle problem that limited his running abilities.

It kept him out of several games in both the NLDS and NLCS, but he had a memorable Game 1 with a triple and walk-off home run off the Yankees' Nestor Cortes.

The blast was the first walk-off grand slam in the World Series.
