Special National Weather Service weather statement for Virginia, Maryland and DC

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro.

A hazardous weather outlook was issued for Thursday afternoon, warning of increased fire conditions, but did not take into account the weekend.

The latest warning applies to Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. It started at 1:10 p.m. on Friday and ends at 4 a.m. on Sunday

Due to the combination of dry conditions and gusty winds, particularly during the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. period on Saturday, elevated fire conditions are now expected to continue, the weather agency said Friday.

Daytime relative humidity levels are expected to be around 30%, along with sustained northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts of 25 to 30 mph. This will result in rapid drying of fine fuels such as grass, leaves and small shrubs, the statement said.

Residents and visitors are asked to exercise caution when handling open flames or devices that produce sparks. Also dispose of cigarette butts, matches and other flammable items in appropriate containers.

Keep vehicles off dry grass and follow local burn bans. Most dry grasses, dead leaves and other tree debris can easily ignite and quickly spread a fire.
