Dodgers fan catches live ball during tense World Series moments, leading to fan interference call

The 2024 World Series has attracted a lot of drama early in the series.

In the middle of an already tense 2-2 tie between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, there was bizarre fan interference during the game.

The Yankees' Gleyber Torres hit a line drive toward left center field, probably toward the wall. However, a fan in a gray Dodgers jersey stuck out his glove and essentially caught a live ball.

The rare and strange play caused the on-field umpires to leave Torres at second instead of letting him round all four bases for a home run, as the Yankee infielder and his Bronx Bombers teammates had hoped.

Luckily for the fan who was seen packing his bag after the controversial play, the inning was meaningless for Los Angeles as no one scored in the ninth inning.

However, other fan interference and no-calls in the postseason have had consequences for the teams involved. One of the more infamous plays was the “Jeffrey Maier Incident” in 1996, in which a 12-year-old fan pulled a live ball into the stands from a Baltimore Orioles outfielder, helping the Yankees do so. The game's umpires did not rule the play as a case of fan interference, giving Derek Jeter a home run in that at-bat. In the end, the Yankees won that series against the Orioles.

“That was a home run, guys,” Jeter jokingly said of the game during MLB on FOX’s October 2024 broadcast.
