    Penn State football looks to pass its most critical away test of the 2024 season tonight.

    The still undefeated and No. 3 ranked Nittany Lions (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) will be forced to raise their level of play against a suddenly overpowering Wisconsin team in front of one of college football's loudest prime-time crowds increase (7:30 p.m., NBC).

    Penn State's defense will have to be more effective and quicker than it has been used to so far this fall to control the tempo and beat a sold-out Camp Randall Stadium. The Wisconsin Badgers are on a renewed three-game winning streak, led in part by superior backups Braedyn Locke at quarterback and Tawee Walker at running back.

    This will be a game of providing “answers” ​​for Penn State – especially ahead of next Saturday’s potential top-five showdown against Ohio State. After a series of shaky starts, is the touted defense really as good as advertised? And will Drew Allar take another step toward becoming one of the best quarterbacks in the country, as he envisioned two years ago?

    If anything, all eyes will be on the Lions' offense, which has become one of the most versatile, varied and entertaining offenses in the country under coordinator Andy Kotelnicki.

    “I mean, he’s kind of an offensive mastermind. I don’t know how he does (those) things,” Penn State offensive lineman Anthony Donkoh said of Kotelnicki this week. “I would say we have a lot more crazy things in store that I can’t wait to actually do in the game.”

    Penn State's offense stalled due to Drew Allar's injury late in the second quarter.

    But the Nittany Lions' dynamic defense is doing its best to save tonight at Camp Randall Stadium in Wisconsin.

    While the Lions did a number on the Badgers' running game (71 yards), it was safety and team leader Jaylen Reed who made the play and gave them the stunning lead.

    Midway through the third quarter, Reed intercepted quarterback Braedyn Locke and returned it 19 yards for the go-ahead score.

    On the ensuing drive, the defense held tight at the end and forced a mid-range field goal.

    The Lions lead 14:13 with just under two minutes left in the third quarter.

    The Lions started strong on both ends tonight, but costly mistakes prevented them from making the breakthrough.

    Wisconsin took advantage, got stronger on defense and settled in late on offense.

    And so the Lions are behind again at halftime (10:7). Just like they did two weeks ago at USC. Like at home against Bowling Green.

    Can they rebound strongly again in the third quarter – their best period so far this fall?

    Watch: Injury concerns late in the first half for defensive Dani Dennis-Sutton and Allar, who limped off the field a bit after the final drive of the second quarter.

    The Nittany Lions appeared to have stopped Wisconsin on third-and-goal.

    But there were too many men on the field.

    The Badgers got a second chance and took advantage of the short running game.

    They now lead 10-7 with 1:23 left before halftime.

    Drew Allar's 10th completion of the night may have been his best.

    Allar started the night with a 10-of-11 pass – his last being a perfect loft to Nick Singleton in the end zone from 6 yards out. The PSU tailback pulled it in with his right hand as he fell to the ground.

    The Nittany Lions have botched a few things just when they seem ready to make an early statement.

    First, the defense faltered when cornerback Jalen Kimber thwarted a clean tackle run by punter Atticus Bertrams. Bertrams kept the ball and ran for the decisive first down, which made the first 50-yard field goal possible.

    Moments later, the Lions were heading toward the end zone when Julian Fleming made a simple, wide-open pass. That led to me trying on fourth down, where a botched snap negated the QB sneak.

    At the end of the first quarter, Wisconsin is still 3-0.

    Penn State's defense had Wisconsin on defense twice on its first offensive possession.

    The Badgers escaped both times.

    And they gave Camp Randall the early lead with the long field goal.

    The Nittany Lions will be missing another running back tonight in Madison.

    Promising true freshman Quinton Martin, who was the No. 3 prospect behind fellow starters Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, was listed as out on the Big Ten's pregame availability report. According to coach James Franklin, the Lions have already been without top backup Cam Wallace in recent games because he suffered an undisclosed long-term injury.

    Martin was the only significant addition to Penn State's report this week. No Lions were listed as questionable tonight.
