Rob Dillingham's rookie season is expected to be filled with inconsistencies

Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Rob Dillingham was born to shoot the basket.

His slender 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame was little to slow him down at Kentucky, where he averaged 15 points and shot more than 40% on three-point shots.

Going into the draft, many analysts had questions about his playmaking abilities and defense. He showed a willingness to pass, but sometimes those passes go astray and can throw a shooter out of rhythm. He was also known for relying on defense.

This will reflect his rookie season, according to Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus, who made a prediction for Dillingham's rookie season.

“Dillingham will be a make-or-break player for the Timberwolves off the bench. He will explode in some games and be a crucial factor in victories; in others he will struggle with his shots and turnovers,” Pincus wrote . “Ultimately, Dillingham will do enough to earn second-team All-Rookie honors.”

If only he could learn from an experienced, defensive-minded field general of a point guard, Mike Conley would be there.

Conley is about to enter his 18th season and will undoubtedly take on a mentorship role at Dillingham. They have similar physical builds, with Conley being just an inch shorter than Dillingham. It's possible the Timberwolves view Dillingham as a younger, higher-scoring version of him.

The Timberwolves sent a significant portion of their future to the San Antonio Spurs to acquire Dillingham.

He will be tasked with leading the Timberwolves' second roster move of the start of the year, with an eye on his ability to efficiently get the ball to his teammates. The dream would be for Dillingham to take over Conley's starting role once Father Time finally says he's too old to play.

The backcourt tandem of Dillingham and Anthony Edwards has a chance to dominate the Western Conference for years to come, but for Dillingham to fully develop as a player, he will need to improve his passing skills and defense.
