ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan tight end Colston Loveland and Michigan State defensive end Anthony Jones shoved, shoved and shoved their helmets, sparking a skirmish in which the rivals traded punches as recent as Saturday night Seconds passed.

“It was a heated affair,” Loveland said at a postgame news conference after the Wolverines won 24-17.

Loveland may have cooled off during his press conference on the Big Ten Network.

“Little brother, keep doing little things,” Loveland told BTN on the field. “So, MSU is the little brother. They can do whatever they want. We knew it would be exciting and keep busy.”

Quarterback Davis Warren knelt to run out the remaining time when Loveland and Jones tangled.

Michigan players left the nearby sideline to join the scrum, and Michigan State players rushed over to join in, too.

“I told the team this was unacceptable,” Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said.

Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith was also disappointed.

“You don’t like finishing that way,” Smith said.

The last time the teams met in the Big House two years ago, a scuffle broke out in the tunnel, with Spartans punching, kicking and using helmets on Michigan players.

Seven Michigan State players were later charged with felonies and the Big Ten fined the school $100,000. Michigan was reprimanded for failing to provide adequate protection for home and visiting team employees entering and exiting the venue.
