Everything Navy coach Brian Newberry said after the loss to Notre Dame Football

3 minutes, 30 seconds Read

Navy trainer Brian Newberry spent less than five minutes speak to the media after his Midshipmen's 51-14 loss to Notre Dame at MetLife Stadium on Saturday. Here's everything he said.

Opening speech

“Of course I was very disappointed with the result. We were really looking forward to it and our children believed we could win. I did that too. Still, I knew we had to play extremely well. We had to be at our best in all three phases and that obviously wasn't the case today.

“I thought our guys were ready to play. I thought we were confident. We thought we had had a good week of preparation. I thought the stage might have been a little big for some of our players today. Lots of mistakes. We had some guys who were afraid of making mistakes. And when you play with fear in your heart like that, mistakes happen. I thought we had some guys trying to play outside of themselves. We talk about not doing that because you just have to be yourself, the best version of yourself, and that wasn't us today.

“Took care of the football. We managed that really well. I think we went five games without turning the football over. I turned it over six times today. Put us in a pretty bad position defensively. Basically there were 14 points today. I thought we were bad on special teams. Our implementation is knowing when to catch the ball fairly and when to field the ball.

“Hats off to Notre Dame. This is a really, really good football team. And they were the better team in every way today. Disappointed but I love this football team. I love these players. I'm still very proud of her. We talked about how it's only a failure if you don't learn from it and grow from it. They stay together and we go back and watch the film and think about what we need to do in the future. And hopefully the next time we play on a stage like this we'll feel better because we have to play today. But it just wasn't good enough all around.

“There were some bright spots. I thought we were able to move the ball well offensively at times. Even when we were moving the football, we weren't playing at a particularly high level. Not all bad, but of course you can't turn the ball over six times. You can't defeat yourself. I thought we had some chances to get off the field defensively. Against a team like this you have to take advantage of these opportunities. And they were better than us on third and fourth downs.”

About Navy's unforced ball losses

“Like I said, we were phenomenal with it. Something we emphasize. You understand, going into a game like this, you have to be up in turnovers in a game like this to have a chance. We will never win a game against a better opponent if we catch up six times.”

When he realized the game against Notre Dame was too big for his players

“You could feel it in the first quarter, I thought. Made a lot of mistakes. Execution point of view. Takes care of the football. Sometimes it's just nerves when you start a game, but I thought we played like that the whole game. It was a great season for us. Lots of expectations. A lot of pressure from outside. It's a big stage, it's played in an NFL stadium. It's Notre Dame. 75,000 people in the stands. But you have to be able to concentrate and do your job at a high level. I didn’t think we would be able to do that consistently today.”

With the mindset of knowing Notre Dame is on the other side

“I don't know. That's a good question. I'm looking forward to going back and watching the movie and just evaluating everything. I think sometimes you want something so badly that you try to act outside of yourself, and I thought we did that sometimes today and it hurt us.”
