Jerod Mayo responds to no-call on Drake Maye hit and 'talks' with referees

After Jerod Mayo saw his quarterback get knocked out of the game by an unpunished hit to the head, he openly talked about the referees.

The first-year coach of the New England Patriots didn't exactly praise the officials in Sunday's game. However, given the huge consequences of the game, Mayo responded evenly when asked about the goal after the game.

“You know, they didn’t call it,” Mayo said. “I talked to them the whole game. I thought some of these calls were questionable. But at the same time, I have to go back and watch the film and we’ll have those conversations.”

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye appeared to have suffered a head injury after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood during the first half of Sunday's win at Gillette Stadium.

Maye stayed in the game four plays after the hit. However, he was later removed from the game and expelled. After the game, Mayo alluded to Maye entering the NFL's concussion protocol.

I came in at halftime and saw him. Being the competitor that he is, he obviously wanted to get back out there and play. But there is a protocol he has to go through. I can't wait to get him back.

After Maye left the game, the Patriots turned to veteran Jacoby Brissett at quarterback. Brissett ultimately led New England to a 25-22 victory over the Jets.

It was a big win for the Patriots. However, Maye's further status remains uncertain. The rookie's return for next week's game against the Tennessee Titans is anything but certain.
