Nigeria grapples with energy crisis amid renewal plans

Nigeria's energy crisis has been highlighted by increasing concerns from various political figures and industry experts, but it has also spurred innovative solutions to address the country's long-standing challenges. In particular, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar highlighted the poor state of Nigeria's electricity supply and highlighted the devastating economic consequences. To strengthen these ideas, some private sector actors are responding with innovative projects. The aim of this partnership is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and provide cleaner last-mile transport solutions. Damola Akindolire, Co-Founder, KarryGo, stressed the need for such initiatives to ease the burden on transport operators struggling with rising petrol prices.

These electric three-wheelers have advanced charging infrastructure and digital payment systems that are expected to not only ease transportation issues but also attract investments in the energy sector. “The transport industry is an important part of the Nigerian economy and our partnership aims to advance the energy transition,” Akindolire said.

Ayomide Daniels, the CTO of KarryGo, expanded on this discussion by mentioning the lack of adequate mobility technology infrastructure. The need to build on blockchain, clean energy and the Internet of Things (IoT) is seen as crucial to securing funding and improving transportation logistics across the country. This technology funding aims to reflect the provision and analysis of real-time data necessary for both transportation safety and efficiency.

Olabanjo Alimi, Managing Director of Qoray Mobility, expressed similar sentiments and clearly addressed how these developments serve Nigeria’s ambition to strengthen its presence in the adoption of electric vehicles across Africa. A sustainable transportation ecosystem can lead to significant social and environmental benefits by reducing the carbon footprint of traditional fossil fuel transportation.

While these projects could potentially demonstrate Nigeria's ability to innovate in its energy and transport sectors, concerns remain over the larger issue of energy transmission and distribution. Atiku Abubakar's calls for improved regulatory frameworks and complementary infrastructure underscore the urgency of further developing Nigeria's energy policy.

The regulator, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has reported numerous grid failures, indicating fundamental problems not only in generation but across the entire electricity value chain. Despite nearly $1.4 billion in investments, this part of the energy sector is still highly fragmented.

Proponents of change argue for a transition to mini-grid systems, in which small power plants serve remote or underserved areas and connect them to the larger national grid. This can help reduce dependence on the central electricity grid, improve energy access and ensure security of supply.

With regard to large-scale energy transitions, the focus remains not only on innovative solutions, but also on a fundamental restructuring of management practices within existing systems.
