5 turning points in the Seattle Seahawks' cursed, lopsided loss to the Buffalo Bills

3 minutes, 6 seconds Read

The Seattle Seahawks looked like they were playing three teams on Sunday: the Buffalo Bills, themselves and the universe. After a comedy of errors and incredible misfortune, the Seahawks lost 31-10 to the Buffalo Bills.

What happened? How did the Seahawks pull off such a dud? Here are five moments from this game that everyone in Seattle will surely want to forget as quickly as possible.

9:51 2nd quarter: Connor Williams hits the ball over Geno Smith's head from the Bills' 3-yard line

Trailing just 7-0 at the start, the Seahawks mounted a drive downfield inside the Bills' 5-yard line. After driving 88 yards, Connor Williams fired the ball over Geno Smith's head. That turned the 2nd-and-goal from the 3-yard line into the 3rd-and-goal from the 22-yard line, a loss of 19 yards. That turned an almost surefire touchdown drive into a give-up field goal. Instead of drawing the game, they settled for a threesome.

4:46 2nd quarter: Geno Smith fumbles on 4th-and-goal from 1st, turnover on downs

On Seattle's next offensive possession, they penetrated the Buffalo Five again, with Josh Jobe intercepting Josh Allen. Facing a 4th-and-goal, the Seahawks decided to go for it. The Seahawks would have taken the lead with a touchdown and only needed one yard to do so. Instead, Williams stepped on Smith's foot, causing the quarterback to go down on downs for a loss of six yards and a turnover. The Seahawks got inside the Bills' five on consecutive drives and scored a total of three points.

2:55 2nd quarter: Josh Allen fumbles on 3rd down and Bills recovers for 1st down

With the Seahawks still only down 7-3, they had a chance to regain some momentum before halftime. They forced the Bills to a 3rd-and-5 on their own 12-yard line. Josh Allen stumbled and lost the football when he wasn't on the first down line. He accidentally kicked the ball forward and the Bills recovered it for a first down. This was a sign that it just wasn't going to be the Seahawks' day.

0:37 2nd quarter: Derick Hall hits the passer roughly, extending the Bills' advance

The “ride from hell” for the Seahawks continued to prefigure a frustrating afternoon in Seattle. After Allen and the Bills extended the drive with a fumble and kicked the ball forward, they knocked on the door to take a two-point lead before halftime. Once again they had to reckon with a third deficit. On 3rd-and-7, Allen rolled out and ended up throwing the ball away, which would have resulted in a fourth down. However, Derick Hall on defense hit Allen very late and a significant penalty was assessed against the passer. This again extended the Bills' drive, which ended with a touchdown and gave Buffalo a 14-3 lead. The Seahawks would never sniff the Bills again.

6:04 3rd quarter: Geno Smith throws an interception to Bills DT Austin Johnson

With the Seahawks still only two points behind in the third quarter, there was still time for a comeback. Seattle crossed into Buffalo territory. At the Buffalo 40, Smith dropped back to Ken Walker III for a screen pass. It was tipped and it found waiting arms of nose tackle Austin Johnson of the Bills for a soul-destroying interception. That killed the drive and ended the Seahawks' remaining comeback hopes. The Bills promptly scored a touchdown on the following drive to make the score 24-3 and the route was open.
