Heavy weekend rain is triggering flooding, surging waterways and runoff across much of the state

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The threat of flooding will continue overnight into Tuesday morning, and the First alert weather day will also be continued nationwide.

According to the National Weather Service, the flood watch for all islands has been extended again until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

An upper level disturbance is prevailing over the state with a very unstable atmosphere, which may easily trigger locally heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms, particularly over windward areas.

Any rainfall could cause flooding on ground already saturated from this weekend's rains.

The heavy rain caused slippery road conditions and made commuting difficult Monday morning. The state Department of Transportation reported at least two crashes on the eastbound H-1 Freeway.

More than 7.5 inches of rain fell in Maunawili between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. Manoa recorded just over 5 inches of rain during the same period, with most of it falling after 6 a.m

Some areas received nearly five inches of rain in just a few hours Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, parts of East Maui received 6 to 12 inches of rain in 36 hours. Heavy rain triggered another flood warning on the island on Sunday afternoon.

The Hawaii News Now weather team marked Saturday, Sunday and Monday as first alert weather days for all islands.

The combination of heavy rain and high surf also closed the Bayfront Highway in Hilo on Saturday due to debris on the roadway.
