World Series News: Ticket prices fall with Yankees' chances

3 minutes, 2 seconds Read

The first two games of the World Series were full of drama. It wasn't until the last pitch that the outcome was certain.

Freddie Freeman ended Game 1 on Friday with the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history. The New York Yankees loaded the bases in the ninth inning of Game 2 before the Dodgers slammed the door and took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Yankees appeared no worse than competitive when the series moved to New York for Game 3 on Monday. But a near-total shutdown by the Dodgers' pitching staff led to a 4-2 victory that put the Yankees' season on the brink.

Now that Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night and the Yankees' chances of coming back are reduced to a prayer, ticket prices are dropping accordingly.

On October 21, second-hand retailer SeatGeek listed the cheapest ticket for Game 1 of the World Series at $1,085, an hour after the Dodgers' emphatic victory over the New York Mets. For Game 2 on Saturday, tickets started at $1,211 on SeatGeek. For Game 4 on October 29th, the cheapest ticket is $1,000.

Los Angeles is participating in the World Series for the fourth time in the last eight seasons, but this is their first appearance since winning the championship in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season.

New York hasn't played in or won a World Series since 2009. Clearly, Yankee fans are in no mood to absorb the atmosphere of a possible season-ending loss. With few exceptions, the first three games have given Yankee fans hope for a reversal of fortune.

At this point in the series, the Yankees are hitting .200 (4 for 20) with runners in scoring position. The Dodgers are batting .158 (3 for 19) but have eight RBIs compared to the Yankees' four – Freeman's grand slam making up all the difference.

The Yankees will hand the ball to rookie Luis Gil in Game 4, while the Dodgers are expected to counter with a bullpen game. Their starting pitcher has yet to be announced.

Due to the lack of a premier starting pitching matchup and the Yankees' uninspiring performance in the series so far, demand for tickets is following a predictable path.
