Review: The powerless Bruins lost to the Flyers 0-2

The Boston Bruins were beaten 2-0 by the Philadelphia Flyers at TD Garden on Tuesday night as the team's offensive woes continue.

“The offense isn’t happening for us,” Jim Montgomery said.

After a good start, the Bruins found it difficult to maintain time in the offensive zone. The struggles piled up for the Bruins, who went 0-for-4 on the power play with a two-man advantage on zero shots. At 5-on-5, they missed shots or didn't shoot at all. The Bruins came up a goal short in the third period, but lacked desperation, only three shots finding the net.

“We don't make plays, we don't do enough to create dangerous scoring opportunities,” Montgomery said after the game.

The loss puts the Bruins at 1-3-1 in their last five games.

Here are the highlights:

First period:

Goalless

The shots were 11-7 Bruins.

Second period:

Tyson Forester sent a wrist shot through Joonas Korpisalo's five-hole at 5:32 of the second period…1:0 Flyers.

Third period:

Joel Farabee intercepted a pass attempt from Charlie McAvoy at 19:36 of the third period to return a long-range shot into the empty net after it passed into the offensive zone. Final score: 2-0 Flyers.

Game notes:

  • It feels like a record has been broken, but if there is no offense, there are no points and you won't win the game. The Bruins couldn't sustain enough time in the offensive zone to create truly dangerous chances. Yes, they had shots on Ersson, but there weren't enough that felt like quality scoring opportunities.
  • While they stayed out of the box for the most part tonight (only two penalties), the Bruins had no power on the power play. They couldn't capitalize on a 5-on-3 game. This man advantage almost ended badly when Scoot Laughton came out of the box and ended up in a 2-on-1 play. Luckily, Korpisalo was able to save the attempt brilliantly. The Bruins took too long to build up in the second half and only got one shot on net as time expired.
  • Montgomery said they need quicker movement and a throw-first mentality on the power play going forward. At 5-on-5, he said they don't generate enough offense and that they have to take advantage when people are in front and then shoot the puck.
  • The Bruins only had three shots on net in the third period. The team sometimes lacks desperation when it is needed most. In the last frame the power play comes again and it is not possible to equalize because the power play units hold on to the puck for too long and try to make nice plays instead of shooting.
  • Overall, Korpisalo looked pretty good in his third start of the season. Although he didn't get many shots, “he gave us a chance to win,” Montgomery said. Korpisalo came up big in the 2-on-1 game while Philly passed him with the expired penalty. He made several key saves before the Flyers scored their opening goal.
  • Are there too many line breaks? As the Bruins try to generate offense and figure out how best to do so, the question becomes: How can the lines build chemistry if they aren't the same for an entire game or multiple games together?
  • The Bruins will face the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, October 31st at 7 p.m
