President Biden said Tuesday that supporters of former President Trump are “garbage,” despite the president claiming he was referring to a single supporter in the possessive – comedian Tony Hinchcliffe.

“The only trash I see floating around out there is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. And it’s un-American,” Biden said, referring to Hinchcliffe’s joke at a Trump rally where he said Puerto Rico was a “floating island.” Garbage.”

Biden later tried to clarify his comment.

“Today I called the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico expressed by Trump's supporters at his Madison Square Garden rally as trash – that's the only word I can think of to describe it,” Biden wrote on X. ” His demonization of Latinos is.” That's all I wanted to say. The comments at this rally do not reflect who we are as a nation.

The White House also released a transcript of Biden's remarks that uses the term “supporter” instead of “supporter.”

“And recently a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a 'floating island of trash.' Well, let me tell you something. I don't know the Puerto Rican I know or a Puerto Rican where I am in my home state from Delaware, they are good, decent, honorable people. The only trash I see out there is that of his supporters – his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and completely contradictory to everything we have done, everything we have been,” the transcript reads.

Vice President Harris and most other Democrats have not publicly responded to Biden's comments. However, Pennsylvania's Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro responded to his statement.

“I’ll give you my new reaction to this,” Shapiro told Fox News Radio political analyst Josh Kraushaar. “I would never insult the good people of Pennsylvania or any American, even if they chose to support a candidate I did not support.”

Trump said he should “please forgive” Biden for “not knowing what he said.”

Harris and Trump both made the comments in their closing arguments on Tuesday, with just a week left until Election Day.

“America: I know that the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what divides us,” Harris said in Washington, D.C. “That’s why I’m in this race. To fight for the people. Just like I always have.” “Nearly 250 years ago, America was born when we snatched freedom from a petty tyrant.”

Trump held a news conference at Mar-a-Lago where he said Harris was pursuing a “campaign of destruction” and “absolute determination.”
