On Tuesday, the metro area will feel more like summer beach weather than late October, with enough warmth to potentially break a high temperature record that has stood for more than a century.

On Monday, the Twin Cities reached 75 degrees on the Minneapolis-St. a maximum temperature value for October 28th. Paul International Airport, the official weather watchdog for the Twin Cities. Another burst of heat Tuesday could catapult the metro into the record books for a second straight day of temperatures near 80 degrees, said Nick Carletta, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Chanhassen.

According to the Minnesota Climatology Office, the mark to beat Tuesday is 78 degrees, set in 1922. Record or not, there may be one last picnic lunch of the season on Tuesday.

Temperatures will begin to drop from Wednesday as rain showers begin. And on Halloween night Thursday it will be cold enough that snow could mix with the precipitation, Carletta said.

For anyone planning to go outdoors to trick-or-treat, “it's not going to be a nice evening,” Carletta said.

Last Halloween was the second snowiest Halloween on record in the Twin Cities, as 1.8 inches of snow fell on October 31st. That was far less than the largest Halloween blizzard ever, when 8.2 inches accumulated in 1991. This storm continued for two more days dumping 28.4 inches of snow in the metro. Duluth recorded 36.9 inches and more than 20 inches fell in numerous locations from the metro to the Arrowhead region, Minnesota Climatology Office records show.

Thursday's snow won't be quite as threatening, but there could be slushy accumulations on lawns and fields in central and northern Minnesota, Carletta said. For most people, however, anything that falls is more of a reminder that “winter is coming,” he said.

Temperatures will rise back above 50°C by the weekend and are expected to remain above normal until the first half of November. The average high temperature on November 1st is 50 degrees and drops to 42 degrees by November 15th.
