Spain: Floods sweep away several cars in the Spanish province of Valencia

At least 70 people have died in the devastating flash floods in southern and eastern Spain. Tragically, the victims include a baby and an elderly woman.

As torrential rains – in some areas a year's worth of rain in just eight hours – flooded cities such as Valencia and Malaga, many of them were trapped “like rats” in their homes and cars, surrounded by rapidly rising floodwaters.

Police and emergency services used helicopters to lift people from their homes and cars as mud-colored water quickly filled streets in villages and towns.

More than 1,000 soldiers have been deployed to the worst-hit areas to help search for missing people.

While Spain's central government set up a crisis committee to coordinate rescue efforts, authorities confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that 70 people have died so far.

A baby is reportedly among the four people who died in the town of Torrent, just outside Valencia. The Independent has not yet been able to verify the information.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said dozens of towns had been flooded.

“For those who are looking for their loved ones, all of Spain feels your pain,” Mr. Sanchez said in a televised address. “Our priority is to help you. We are devoting all necessary resources to ensure we can recover from this tragedy.”

Adding: “We must not let up because the weather front is still wreaking havoc and we cannot say that this devastating episode is over.”
