Diwali festival is celebrated on Amavasya (new moon) of Krishna Paksha. This year, there is much debate about when the festival should be celebrated, as Amavasya tithe is spread over two days, starting on October 31 at 3:52 p.m. and ending on November 1 at 6:16 p.m. Due to this overlap, some experts have stated that Diwali is celebrated on October 31, while others prefer to celebrate it on November 1, following traditional customs.

Experts claim that Amavasya begins on October 31, 2024 at 3:52 pm and Pradosh Kaal falls on the same evening. Traditionally, Diwali is celebrated when both occur together, making October 31 ideal for Lakshmi Puja. Some spiritual leaders also recommend celebrating Diwali on the night Amavasya begins to ensure that the festival is consistent with its symbolic meaning of darkness dispelled by light.

Some other experts claim that in Vedic traditions, Udaya Tithi (tithing at sunrise) has great significance for auspicious events. On November 1, 2024, Amavasya will continue until sunrise and end at 6:16 p.m., making it spiritually aligned with the Diwali celebrations. This reinforces the belief that November 1 is the ideal day for Diwali.

According to Drik Panchang, Diwali should be celebrated on November 1, 2024. Performing Lakshmi Puja on the evening of November 1 during Pradosh Kaal and Vrishabha Kaal ensures that the rituals are performed under the most favorable planetary conditions.
