The government has failed motorists by failing to mention support for motorists through expensive car insurance prices.

According to Confused.com, the average price of car insurance is currently £861. Although this amount has fallen by more than £130 compared to the end of 2023, many motorists are still struggling with high costs.

Certain drivers may have to pay more than others depending on the situation. For example, someone in Inner London will pay £1,357, while a 17-year-old will pay a staggering £2,727 for a year of cover.

Despite pre-Budget optimism that more would be done to help motorists with expensive car insurance premiums.

However, Rachel Reeves made no mention of measures to reduce the burden of expensive car insurance prices in her autumn statement this afternoon.

Earlier this month, Transport Secretary Louise Haigh and Business Secretary to the Treasury Tulip Siddiq outlined plans to bring together industry groups and consumer advocates to tackle the rising cost of car insurance.

The taskforce will identify the factors behind soaring premiums and agree on solutions to keep costs under control after motorists have struggled with high prices in recent years.

At the time, Haigh said: “Our new expert taskforce is a big step forward in delivering a fair deal for drivers.”

“It will give this issue the attention it deserves – rooting out the factors that are driving up costs for the industry and getting drivers back on the road.”

Reacting to the Budget, Rhydian Jones, car insurance expert at Confused.com, said: “Freezing fuel duty will not only help offset high fuel prices, but will also help mitigate the impact of other motor costs.”

“With high MOT bills and insurance prices, motorists are paying thousands of pounds. So this is a step in the right direction to make driving more affordable.”

Mark Tongue, joint managing director and founder of Select Car Leasing, said motorists had become an easy target for the government when it came to “taxpayer money”.

However, he pointed out that the Chancellor's “somewhat surprising” Budget announcement would be welcomed by motorists, particularly those struggling with “sky-high” spending Insurance Cost”.
