The latest Hollywood hits determine this year's Halloween costume trends.

The CBS News data team used the annual FrightGeist tool and box office data from Google Trends to find out how many of this year's most popular costumes are inspired by characters from top-grossing films. From rebooted classics to fresh superhero makeovers, people are dressing up as characters they've seen in theaters all year long.

Data from the tool shows that the films that inspire the hottest costume ideas aren't always the top performers at the box office. At the forefront of the costume trend is Shrunken Head Bob from the 2024 sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, even though it is the fourth-highest-grossing film nationwide this year.

Although “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” dominate the box office as the top two films this year, their costumes rank slightly lower on Google's FrightGeist list of hottest costumes.

The data team found a connection between FrightGeist's hottest costumes and the influence of some of the top 10 grossing films.

We looked at five films that the most popular costumes come from: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part 2, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Inside Out 2.

Of the five, “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” have the highest search interest in the U.S. over the past 12 months.

Across the country, more states searched for “Inside Out 2” (31 states) than “Deadpool & Wolverine” (19 states) in the last 12 months. The District of Columbia was the only U.S. region with a different top search, favoring “Dune: Part 2.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

In the last 12 months, search interest in the original Beetlejuice film in the US was almost three times higher than in the new film. Of the five films, this sequel was the only film that was less searched for than the original.

Inside Out 2

“Inside Out 2” generated almost twice as much search interest in the US as the original “Inside Out” last year.

Deadpool and Wolverine

“Deadpool & Wolverine” generated more than twice as much search interest in the US as the original “Deadpool” last year.

Dune: Part Two

“Dune: Part Two” generated slightly more search interest than “Dune: Part One” in the US last year.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” had more than three times the search interest of “Godzilla vs. Kong” (its American prequel) and had slightly more search interest than “Godzilla Minus One” (the 2023 Japanese film).
