Rain and snow falling across Colorado on Wednesday will bring dry, freezing overnight temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

“Frost and freeze conditions are expected to kill unprotected sensitive vegetation and potentially damage unprotected outdoor installations,” NWS forecasters said in a freeze warning. “Take steps now to protect sensitive plants from the cold and drain irrigation systems.”

Forecasters said temperatures in the Front Range, Urban Corridor and adjacent Plains are expected to drop to as low as 22 degrees overnight.

Meteorologists said temperatures in Denver would peak at around 39 degrees on Wednesday before falling to 24 degrees overnight.

NWS forecasters said the freeze warning in the Denver metro area includes Fort Collins, Boulder, the western suburbs of Denver, Castle Rock, Greeley and Byers. The warning is in effect from Wednesday 10 a.m. to Thursday 9 a.m.

As of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, several Colorado mountains had already seen 18 inches of new snow from Tuesday's storm system, according to NWS meteorologists. Between 10 and 30 cm of snow also fell on lower mountain peaks and in the foothills.

An additional 4 to 6 inches of snow could fall in Colorado's mountains Wednesday as the storm subsides, according to NWS forecasters.
