Mookie Betts announced that he wanted to fight against fans who grabbed him

1 minute, 46 seconds Read

Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts said all the right things after one of the more bizarre incidents in World Series history occurred in Game 4 at Yankee Stadium. And really, he didn't say much after some overzealous fans manhandled him in equal parts comedic and disturbing fashion.

“When it comes to the person and the game, it doesn't matter,” Betts told reporters after the Dodgers lost Game 4. “We lost.” It's irrelevant. I'm fine, he's fine. Everything is cool. We lost the game, that’s kind of what I’m focused on. We need to turn the page and prepare for tomorrow.”

After Betts helped Los Angeles make history by becoming the first team to overcome a five-run deficit and secure a World Series title, Betts was asked about the incident by FOX's David Ortiz and was finally freed express.

“That was wild, man,” Betts said. “That was really wild.” I've never experienced anything like that. I told my wife that it was the second time in my life that I had ever wanted to fight someone. I understand, man. I understand it. I don’t know if he tried to get the ball, I don’t know what he really wanted to do, but he had to do what he had to do and it is what it is.”

Winning is the best because no one can say anything about it and you can finally say how you really feel. Betts' desire to respond immediately underscores how ridiculous the situation was. These two fans were – and still are – treated as fun new celebrities, while Betts' career would have changed forever if he had brought them back. And that's why it was so ridiculous that it took so long for the adults in the room to come out and say they would no longer be welcome at Game 5.

But all's well that ends well. Betts is a champion and the disruptors get to be on podcasts. A win-win for everyone involved except the Yankees.
