Starting this winter, there will be no wind chill advisories, watches or warnings. Not because it won't get cold, but because the language the National Weather Service uses regarding extreme cold events has changed.

Wind chill clock will be Extremely cold clock
Wind chill warning will be Extreme cold warning
Windchill advice will be Cold Weather Notice

Extreme cold warnings and warnings are issued when the weather forecast calls for wind chills of -30°. The cold weather advisory is issued when wind chill values of -20° are expected.

Changes have been made to extremely cold headlines

The change aims to make cold weather notification easier. This keeps the headline focus on the cold weather, regardless of the wind.

Tim Halbach, warning coordination meteorologist with the Milwaukee National Weather Service, said his office has issued 96 wind chill warnings in the last 19 years, but only four wind chill warnings. That equates to an average of about five cold warnings per year, although cold warnings are far less frequent.
