More Rain and Possible Flooding Expected for Chaves County | Local News

“Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, streams, creeks and flood-prone locations,” the National Weather Service alert said. Flash flooding is also possible in the “at risk areas of Chaves County” mentioned in the warning.

Josh Schroeder, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told the Roswell Daily Record that the downpours are expected to begin between 6 and 9 p.m. Friday before tapering off Saturday morning and ending completely around noon. He said there is an 80% chance of precipitation for the areas under flood watch.

For Roswell and Chaves County, the news comes as residents continue to recover from record-breaking rains on Oct. 19 that caused flooding in Roswell and downstream communities, claiming two lives and causing millions of dollars in damage.

The city hopes to avoid further flooding but is taking measures to protect residents.

“We're expecting about two inches of rain Friday and Saturday, so we're trying to prepare for that,” Roswell City Manager Chad Cole said.

A news release issued Thursday said some sand and bags will be available to the public outside the Roswell Streets Department at 320 East Alameda St. People are instructed to bring their own shovels to fill the bags and to be respectful of others.

Cole said Thursday he was looking for places around the city where people could get more sandbags.

He added that the Spring River and Hondo River beds, which quickly filled with water and debris during the flooding nearly two weeks ago, have now been cleared of all vehicles and large objects that could cause water to pool and overflow.
