'Agatha All Along' Star Patti LuPone on That Seal Channeling Glinda in the Next Trial (Exclusive)

Episode 6 of Agatha all the timetitled “Familiar by Thy Side,” revealed that Lilia Calderu, Patti LuPone's fortune-telling witch, was the one who cast the identity masking spell on Billy Kaplan (Joe Locke), having predicted that the Eastview boy would die in a car accident At the age of 13, he allowed his body to be inhabited by the spirit of Wanda's witch son, Billy Maximoff. A side effect of the seal is that Lilia cannot remember casting it. The same goes for LuPone himself.

Now that the secret is out, Lilia will play a larger role in answering some questions about this puzzle box series from showrunner Jac Schaeffer (WandaVision). Episode 7, out tonight at 6:00 PM PT/9:00 PM ET, focuses on the Witch Street divination process. So it's Lilia's time to shine. And no, she and Sasheer Zamata's Jennifer Kale didn't die in that sinking mud after Locke's Billy threw them off the road.

“Jac is so clever at figuring out the mystery and then solving it,” LuPone introduces. “I didn't understand the context when I first read all the episodes. In 7, when Lilia's powers awaken, she ties together all of these events that we saw in the previous episodes. There’s an explanation for that.”

EW can reveal an exclusive snippet of the trial from the episode (watch above), in which the remaining coven (RIP Alice and Mrs. Hart) are dressed as iconic movie witches: Lilia as Glinda, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) as the Wicked Witch, Billy as Maleficent and Jen as the Evil Queen from Snow White. “Who would have ever thought I would play Glinda, the Good Witch?” exclaims LuPone. “The well-kept secret is that I am a comedian. I say this with a wink, but.” Evita ruined my career. I came out Evita like that tycoon, bitch tap dancer, but my first Tony nomination was for a slapstick comedy with Rosalind As you like it. The character was very wacky and cute, but people don't associate that aspect with me because I've had roles in musical theater. So Glinda wasn't necessarily a challenge for me, Patti, even though it may seem that way to the majority of people who know my background. I I know this side of me.

The sneak peek shows Lilia preparing to guess Billy's path through cards, explaining how they work and what the table layout means. “This layout was, for lack of a better word, Jac’s invention,” LuPone points out. “I had to memorize it because it was very specific about what each card will represent on your life path. They will represent certain aspects: love, fate, luck, career.”

In previous interviews with EW, Locke called this episode the series' best, “just because of Jac Schaeffer's incredible form and storytelling,” while Hahn said it was “a childhood dream come true” to star alongside LuPone's Glinda on The Wicked Witch. to switch mode.

“I think I speak for many of us. We were breathless the first time we saw Patti as the good witch,” Hahn said. “It was so sweet and perfect and just the sweetest – not words you would normally use to describe this powerhouse on stage.”

LuPone further teases Lilia's bond with Zamata's Jen in the coming hour of streaming television. “Sasheer and I talk about the nature of a witch in a way that has never been discussed in the episodes before,” she says. “We’re still argumentative with each other – a little bit, not quite – and in this particular (episode) we develop a bond with each other as a unit. I guess that's what Lilia needs to accomplish in order to re-establish this circle. And basically what is the definition of circle? Protecting your soulmates, protecting the people you care about, acknowledging that. I think it has a lot of heart.”
