Next week, millions of people across the country will cast their votes for the next president of the United States.

As the polls begin to close on November 5th, especially in such a polarizing election, many will be wondering when a winner will be announced.

How long does it take for a presidential candidate to concede?

In modern history, it usually doesn't take too long to declare a winner in presidential elections, as the losing candidate usually concedes shortly after Election Day.

The tradition of concessions began in 1896, when Democrat William Jennings Bryan made concessions to Republican William McKinley two days after the election.

According to National Geographic, Bryan sent a telegram to McKinley congratulating him and saying, “We have submitted the matter to the American people and their will is law.”

Since then, as USA TODAY reports, most candidates have conceded within a day or two of the election.

In 2012, for example, Republican Mitt Romney made a concession to President Barack Obama in the early hours of Wednesday, November 7, the morning after the election.

In 2016, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton conceded to former President Donald Trump on Wednesday, November 9, the day after the election.

Is a concession required to determine a winner?

According to National Geographic, while a concession is a common courtesy, it is not a formal part of the election process and there are no legal consequences if a candidate chooses not to concede.

Furthermore, a concession is not legally binding, as seen in the 2000 election when Democratic candidate Al Gore made concessions to Republican George W. Bush. Shortly thereafter, his concession was revoked because the results were too close to predict, according to History.com.

Weeks of litigation and vote recounts in Florida ended with a controversial Supreme Court decision and Gore finally conceded Bush again 36 days after the election.

The 2020 election

In the 2020 election, results were announced four days after Election Day on November 3rd.

On January 7, 2021, after the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, Trump confirmed the fact that President Joe Biden would be inaugurated in the coming weeks, saying: “A new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th.” Office introduced.”

As for the upcoming election, a new SSRS CNN poll found that 30% of elected voters believe Trump would not accept the results if necessary and would concede once the votes were certified.

How long can we expect to wait for a winner to be announced?

As USA TODAY reports, it will likely be some time before a winner is announced due to the expected tension of the race and the time it will take to count ballots.

According to USA TODAY, several factors could be contributing to the slowdown in counting, including the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, recent changes to election laws across the country and the fact that key swing states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are not starting to count mail-in and absentee ballots can vote until election day.

When do the polls close on November 5th?

Polls across the United States will close at various times on the night of November 5th.

Although there are some local exceptions, according to 270 to Win, most of New Jersey will close at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, while West Coast states will close at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
