Find out if your city has a local fire ban – NBC Connecticut

With extreme fire danger across Connecticut, some cities are enacting their own fire bans to prevent flames from spreading.

Between 80 and 90 fires are being tracked by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), including the Hawthorne Fire, which has now been burning for nearly two weeks.

DEEP has imposed a statewide burning ban, but it is up to local communities to decide whether they want to ban open burning in their city as well.

We checked with all 169 cities in the state, and you may be surprised to learn that not all cities have enacted their own bans.

The statewide burn ban applies to all public lands such as state parks, forests and wildlife management areas. A state of emergency was also declared.

No matter what city you are in, it is against the law to light anything on fire in these areas.

But despite the extreme fire danger, some cities say they are strictly following government guidelines. Others we spoke to said they haven't had any real problems or just advise avoiding campfires and not using flammable materials.

Depending on where you live, you could face fines or arrest if you don't follow the rules.
