After the comedy bit, some of Roan's fans accused the comedian of “mocking” the new pop sensation, who had made similar comments about needing to protect her mental health from an overbooked schedule and pushy fans.

The backlash prompted the Evil Star took to Instagram to clarify that the skit was intended to show support for the “Good Luck, Babe” singer. “If my personal stance and the piece aren't entirely clear about their support, that's probably why,” Yang said. “Everything she's ever asked for has been reasonable, and even then we can tie it into another story about boundaries or whatever.”

After rapidly gaining mainstream attention in the year since the release of her debut album in September 2023, The rise and fall of a Midwestern princess, Roan made them SNL Debuts in the 50th season episode. The singer, known for her drag-inspired campy aesthetic and powerful vocals, performed “Pink Pony Club,” a synth-pop ode to queer nightlife, and debuted “The Giver,” a tongue-in-cheek country bop about the ability of a woman more than a man.

Earlier this year, the singer-songwriter called out toxic fans for interfering in her personal life.

“If you're still wondering, 'Well, if you didn't want that to happen, then why did you choose a career where you knew you wouldn't be happy with the outcome of success?' – understand this: I appreciate the success of the project, the love I feel and the gratitude I feel,” she said on Instagram in August. “What I don’t accept is scary people, touching and stalking.”

In the same month interview The magazine had a conversation between Roan and Yang in which they praised each other.

“I fucking love you. I know we don't know each other that well, but I'll follow you for the rest of time. You’re incredible,” the Emmy nominee said SNL Star said to Roan. She replied: “Thank you very much. A lot of people only take me seriously because people like you confirm that I'm important. That’s why I’m very grateful that you enthusiastically supported me in an entertaining way.”
