But if that part was always there, there were things about that part that were completely different. On the one hand, there were more shots that were offside. He averaged 5.1 yards per pass attempt in his first three starts this year. On Sunday it was 6.6 with six passes of 15 yards or more. That's an indicator, but during the game some of the old bad habits were still close to the surface.

In the fourth quarter, trailing 22-17, he took the lead three times after three short passes failed to return the 10 yards needed for a conversion. There was clear frustration on the sidelines. But with his next chance, 3:26 minutes before the end, everything was visibly different again.

Incomplete bottom for Jalen Coker Incomplete bottom for Sanders. Then a 26-yard connection to Xavier Legette, who had a pass snatched away for an interception early in the game. Then there was a disruption caused by a long pass.

Those shots, and they were symbolic shots, even if only one of them hit, were the biggest difference for Young on Sunday.

“I think he’s ready to take those shots,” Legette said. “Now he’s not worried about missing it, but he’s trying to give us a chance to make the play.”

“So I feel like he's just continuing to build, you know, he's going to continue to progress.”
