The storm system moves in on Sunday night

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) – We're forecasting a busy week of weather, starting with a storm system moving through Sunday night (11/3). A mix of rain and snow will move through the area early on Sunday evening.

The National Weather Service has several hazards and warnings active across the region. Winter weather advisories are in effect for portions of the Pikes Peak region, the San Juans and areas surrounding Las Animas County. In general, the timing of these hazards is active from Sunday evening to Monday afternoon (November 4th).

The timing of the storm system depends on the altitude at which a rain-snow mix first occurs. We may also see some lightning as activity increases around Pueblo.

There will be more snow until well after midnight and into Monday morning. Some areas will still see rain at this time as the air at the lowest elevations is not cold enough to bring snow.

The majority of activity in the Pikes Peak region will end late Monday morning. The Arkansas River Valley and south will continue to experience activity during the second half of the day. The latest models are pushing the snow a little further into parts of the Eastern Plains.

When it comes to snow depths, that's exactly what the FOX21 Storm Team thinks. This system will largely be an elevation dependent snow event, meaning higher elevations will see slightly more snowfall this time around. The only exception could be the extreme southeastern side of the viewing area, where convective snow could take over and bring locally higher amounts.

Winds will be quite breezy early Monday morning. This could lead to heavy snow drifts and reduced visibility. So be careful when driving to work. Winds may gust to 25 to 30 miles per hour.

The temperatures tonight will be between 20, 30 and 40 degrees, depending on the altitude. Significantly cooler temperatures are expected for the higher terrain.

The highs on Monday also look cool. Colorado Springs will be happy to get out of the 30s! Warmer weather is on the horizon Tuesday, but it will be short-lived as a stronger winter storm heads toward southern Colorado.
