Duke Basketball Pro revives Mavs after injury-hit magic

The Dallas Mavericks and Orlando Magic each have two Duke basketball products. But Magic center Paolo Banchero is out indefinitely with a torn right oblique, and fellow Orlando starter Wendell Carter Jr. played just nine minutes in Sunday night's 108-85 road loss to the Mavericks before retiring with one Left foot injury ruled out.

As for the two NBA Blue Devils from Dallas, starter Kyrie Irving and backup Dereck Lively II, both key weapons for last season's Western Conference champions, each played a significant role in the Mavericks' winning ways this season improved to 4-2 over the Magic (3-4).

Irving spent 28 minutes in the contest, recording 17 points, two rebounds, three assists, two steals and just one turnover while shooting 5 of 11 from the field, 1 of 2 from three and 6 of 7 at the charity stripe.

And Lively, just an NBA sophomore and still a few months away from his 21st birthday, needed just 20 minutes to record his second double-double for the 2024-25 Mavs. The 7-foot-1, 230-pounder, who may emerge as an early candidate for NBA Sixth Man of the Year, finished the game with 11 points, 11 boards and a dime while shooting 5-for-7 from the field and 1 :1 -3 on the line.

Dallas hosts the Indiana Pacers (2-4) on Monday at 9:45 p.m. ET.
