Voters may not know the winner of the presidential race on election night, but they know where Ohio stands.

County election boards are allowed to get a head start on early and postal voting, which will make counting faster on Tuesday. In key battleground states like Wisconsin, election officials are not allowed to fill out mail-in ballots before Election Day.

Here's how Ohio counts and reports results.

When does Ohio count early mail-in ballots?

Election boards could begin processing and scanning mail-in ballots on Oct. 8, the first day of early in-person voting. You can only count the ballots after the polls close on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

According to a directive from Secretary of State Frank LaRose, election officials must upload their first absentee ballot results by 8 p.m.

Where can I view the election results for Tuesday, November 5th?

Once the polls close, Ohioans can follow unofficial election results on this newspaper's website.

Local authorities must update their numbers either half-hourly or hourly, depending on the county, until all counties have reported results.

Will Ohio ballots still be counted after election night?

Election officials will tally outstanding absentee and provisional ballots received by Nov. 9. Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked no later than Monday to be counted.

What are unofficial election results?

All election results are unofficial until the panels have completed their official polling. You can begin this process on November 11th and must submit certified results to LaRose's office by November 20th at 2:00 p.m.
