Wilson's late brace gives Fulham a DRAMATIC win over Brentford

5 minutes, 14 seconds Read

Harry Wilson scored twice in injury time as Fulham came back to beat Brentford 2-1 in a thrilling west London derby.

Wilson was the hero from Fulham's bench on Monday as Marco Silva's side – who were on the wrong end of their last Premier League game against Everton – rescued a win from the jaws of defeat.

Fulham will feel it was a win they earned in a game they dominated from the start after the Bees took the lead against the run of play through Vitaly Janelt's stunning strike in the 24th minute.

But Fulham's pressure finally showed when Wilson brilliantly fired in Adama Traore's cross in the second minute of stoppage time and – after Bernd Leno made an excellent stop against Brentford at the other end – the former Liverpool midfielder nodded in again to Craven raves about sending cottage.

Fulham's win saw them move up to ninth place, while Brentford fell to 12th after their fifth league defeat of the season.

How the game developed

Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken was quickly called into action and confidently parried Fulham's Raul Jimenez's attempt with a fantastic double save to deny Reiss Nelson.

But after Emile Smith Rowe and Nelson failed to capitalize on better chances, Fulham were stunned when Brentford scored with their first significant foray forward – Janelt firing a brilliant long-range shot into the bottom right corner.

VJ punches past Leno

Just before half-time, Keane Lewis-Potter almost doubled Brentford's lead when his shot from the edge of the area bounced just wide of the post.

Fulham kept trying, but when Rodrigo Muniz missed a good chance in the 88th minute, their chances of a point appeared to be gone.

Wilson had other ideas, however, as he somehow sent a backheel over Flekken and into the left side of Brentford's goal.

Leno then prevented Fabio Carvalho from scoring against his former club and Wilson quickly made good on his goalkeeper's work with a shot off the shoulder in the final minutes.

Fulham's substitutes prove the difference

For a long time it looked as if Fulham would end the game empty-handed, but Silva's substitutions paid off as the hosts turned the game completely on its head.

They looked particularly dangerous on the left as Nelson and Antonee Robinson linked up seamlessly to create promising opportunities, but no one in white could deny them.

At half-time, Silva was probably unlucky – Fulham had dominated from the first whistle, but were then overtaken by a quick counter-attack (and a brilliant finish) after losing the ball in midfield, and it was clear he hadn't I'm happy to make hasty changes.

However, their desperation showed as the clock approached the end of the 90th minute and players like Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey sent tame long-range shots straight at Flekken.

But the introduction of Traore and especially Wilson sparked a comeback that will long be remembered. After this duo teamed up on the right to restore parity, Robinson finally had some joy at the other end, scoring Fulham's decisive goal with a diving header.

For Fulham it doesn't matter whether Wilson meant one of his targets.

Bee Away Blues

Brentford have been enjoying their home comforts of late, putting on entertaining shows in their last two games at the Gtech Community Stadium with thrilling wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town.

However, they have struggled away from home this season, which is perhaps unsurprising considering they have played Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United on their travels.

It looked like they had finally turned things around away from home despite being unlucky for most of the game, with Flekken's early intervention ensuring Brentford stayed in the game before they scored the opener.

They still struggled to break through against Fulham's strong pressing, with the usually influential Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa unable to break through as the hosts missed chance after chance.

Brentford steadfastly resisted having crosses crammed into their penalty area, but a loss of concentration at the wrong time ultimately cost them, even if Wilson's first-time finish was a touch of genius (or an ounce of luck).

What managers said

Marco Silva: “It was definitely a deserved win. We started at the front and dominated the whole game. We had two clear chances to score in the first 20 minutes.”

“After they scored, we didn’t lose confidence and trust in ourselves, we kept pushing them back and creating enough space to not lose at halftime.”

“I told the players, this is football, this can happen, but we have to keep pushing, working hard and playing our way.”

Thomas Frank: “It was hard. It's very hard emotionally right now. When you lead in the 92nd minute and then lose, it's tough. I don't think we've reached our highest level. I think Fulham were better that day. There was that.' There was a lot of good defending and a lot of effort and I thought that would have given us the win, with the chance for Fabio Carvalho, but then we lost.

“If we look back on the game and are more calm, we will probably be very happy with the defensive performance. I thought there were incredible blocks and recovery runs and everything we did well. We didn’t do enough with the ball.”
