GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — As Election Day is underway, voters are heading to the polls to cast their ballots and there are several rules people must follow, according to Michigan's secretary of state.

For all elections, polling stations open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. Voters who stand in line at their polling station by 8 p.m. on election day have the right to cast their vote.

Michigan law allows same-day voter registration, meaning eligible citizens can register and vote until Election Day. Voters may register or update their voter registration in person at their city or town clerk's office until 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Voters wishing to register on Election Day must bring proof of residency to their clerk's office.

Additionally, only U.S. citizens are eligible to register to vote or cast a vote in both state and federal elections.

For privacy and security reasons, voters will not be allowed to hold up their ballot for a selfie or photos, but they will be allowed to take photos outside the voting area.

When filling out the ballot, voters can “split” their ballot or vote directly by selecting the “Partisan Races” option on the page of their ballot.

As a reminder, Michigan has banned the display of election-related materials at ballot boxes for decades. This includes clothing, buttons, flyers, brochures and stickers.

If you would like to confirm your polling location, you can find the information here.
