Vice President Kamala Harris has reduced former President Donald Trump's once double-digit lead among men to single digits, according to a new Marist poll.

This election has long highlighted a dramatic gender divide: men primarily support Trump and women primarily support Harris.

According to an NPR/PBS News/Marist poll, Trump had a 16 percent lead among men at 57 percent in early October over Harris's 41 percent. But the vice president has narrowed that 16-point lead to just four points at 47 percent to Trump's 51 percent, the latest edition of the poll released Monday shows.

However, the former president has narrowed Harris' lead among women, from 18 points in the Oct. 3 poll to 11 points in the most recent.

Previously, Harris was 58 percent to Trump's 40 percent among women, now she is 55 percent to Trump's 44 percent.

Overall, the gender gap has reduced from 34 to 15 points over time.

The Nov. 5 poll was conducted between Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 among 1,560 adults made up of registered and likely voters. It has an error rate of 3.2 percentage points. The Oct. 3 poll was conducted between Sept. 27 and Oct. 3 among 1,628 adults, also made up of registered and likely voters. It has an error rate of 3.3 percentage points.

Newsweek emailed the Trump and Harris teams for comment.

The gender voting gap is not a new phenomenon. Since the 1980s, women have been more likely to support Democrats and men have been more likely to support Republicans, and this political divide has only grown larger over time.

But with this year's election as close as ever, the gender gap threatens to become a defining element.

On Monday, Newsweek examined national polls since Oct. 28 that provide a breakdown of voting intentions by gender and found that, on average, women vote for Harris by 8 points while men vote for Trump by 10 points. This corresponds to an average gender difference of 9 points.

Polls show Harris is supported by an average of 52 percent of female voters and 43 percent of male voters Newsweek Analysis. Meanwhile, 53 percent of male voters support Trump, compared to 44 percent of female voters.

“However this election goes, gender will be a determining factor in the outcome,” Carrie Baker, a professor of women, gender and sexuality at Smith College in Massachusetts, said previously Newsweek.

The race remains neck-and-neck, with the lead in the polls for either candidate razor-thin.

Poll provider FiveThirtyEight sees Harris as the favorite to win on Election Day for the first time since Oct. 17 after its simulations showed the vice president winning 50 times out of 100, while Trump wins 49 times out of 100.

Similarly, FiveThirtyEight founder Nate Silver, who is no longer associated with the site, technically named it for Harris. In his latest election forecast for FiveThirtyEight's “direct descendant,” the Silver Bulletin, he picked Harris as the favorite to win by a razor-thin margin.

Out of 80,000 simulations, Harris won 50.015 percent of the time, while Trump won 49.65 percent of the time, according to Silver's model. About 270 simulations resulted in a 269-269 tie in the Electoral College.
