BIDDEFORD (WGME) – Independent Sen. Angus King is seeking his third term in office against three challengers, all considered hopeless, to unseat the popular 80-year-old senator and former Maine governor.

Republican candidate Demi Kouzounas says she's optimistic. She met with voters across the state on Tuesday, including in Biddeford.

She says the area she's from had the highest voter turnout she's ever seen.

Despite the high turnout, the race is likely to be a tough fight for Kouzounas.

The last time King ran for re-election in 2018, he defeated his Republican opponent Eric Brakey by 19 points.

And it's not just King that Kouzounas is up against.

She is also running against Democrat David Costello and Independent Jason Cherry.

Kouzounas believes it will be a close race and that she won't be surprised if it goes to ranked choice voting.

She believes she deserves Maine's moderate voice and wants to offer them a chance for change.

“We have a lot of problems, and I feel like Senator King has voted with the current administration 98.5 percent of the time. “So I don't see any change, and if people are looking for change, and if people are looking, then that's what they want.” I wanted to see a different policy, that I was their candidate, and that's why I decided to run” said Kouzounas.
