You've cast your vote – what now?

Millions of people across the country voted and various states were called. According to USA TODAY, former President Donald Trump is close to retaking the White House after winning Pennsylvania, Florida, Tennessee and several Southern Republican strongholds. Vice President Kamala Harris won a group of states in the Northeast, including New York, Vermont and Massachusetts.

However, the final results of the presidential election may not be known immediately because different states have different election laws. Back in 2020, President Joe Biden's victory was announced four days after Election Day by the Associated Press when now-former President Donald Trump falsely claimed voter fraud following his election loss.

The race remains too close to decide as results show tight races in critical swing states. Victory in the seven battleground states paves the way for Trump and Harris to the White House, USA TODAY reported.

Voting is only the first step of the electoral process, but the selection of the next president and vice president of the United States continues for several weeks beyond November 5th.

What happens now? Here is the timeline of events after Election Day on November 5th.

What happens after election day?

Three things happen in December after Election Day. First, the states issue certificates of determination, then the voters in their states vote, and finally the electoral votes arrive.

Here's what it all means:

Dec 11: On December 11, each state's executives will issue a certificate of determination, an official document that identifies a state's appointed electors. Once election results are certified in each state, state leaders send the certificates to the Archivist of the United States.

Dec 17: The electors then meet in their respective states and vote for president and vice president in separate rounds. According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, voters sign multiple certificates certifying their votes, sign and certify the certificates, and send them to officials in Washington, D.C., and their state.

Dec 25: Electoral votes must be received by the President of the Senate and the Archivist no later than the fourth Wednesday in December. If the votes are not received, the President of the Senate or the Archivist shall request the chief electoral officer of the State or States to send the certificate maintained in his State.

When does Congress count the electoral votes?

On or before January 3, the Archivist will send sets of certificates to Congress upon request. According to the National Archives and Records Administration, this typically happens when the Senate doesn't receive the certificates on time.

Three days later, on January 6th, the new Congress will meet and count the electoral votes. The Vice President presides over the counting and announces the results of the Electoral College vote. The President of the Senate then announces who has been elected President and Vice President of the United States.

When is Inauguration Day?

Inauguration Day occurs every four years on January 20th. In 2025, Inauguration Day falls on Monday.

During the ceremony, the President-elect and Vice President-elect take the oath of office and become President and Vice President, respectively, of the United States. The inauguration ceremony will take place at the US Capitol in Washington, DC
