House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is counting on Republicans to have complete control of Washington, D.C., after the GOP swept the White House and Senate on Tuesday night.

“As more results come in, it will become clear that, as we have always predicted, Republicans are ready to have a unified government in the White House, Senate and House,” Johnson said in a statement Wednesday morning.

He said Republican promises of “secure borders, lower costs, peace through strength and a return to common sense” had pushed Americans to vote red across the country.

“House Republicans managed to achieve key turning points in swing states like Pennsylvania and Michigan, while our battle-tested incumbents secured re-election everywhere,” Johnson continued. “The latest data and trends indicate that after all votes were tallied, Republicans maintained our majority despite being on a map with 18 seats won by Biden.”

“We will continue to monitor the results and ensure that every legal ballot is counted throughout the process.”

Late Wednesday morning, The Associated Press projected that Republicans had gained 198 seats in the House of Representatives and Democrats had won 177 seats. Of the 435 House elections across the country, the first party to win 218 will receive a majority.
