Heavy rain could cause localized flooding tonight and Thursday

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Heavy rainfall returns to the Midlands this evening and Thursday, prompting us to issue a warning First alert weather day.

A flash flood warning has been issued for the northwestern portion of Calhoun County, the southeastern portion of Lexington County, the north-central portion of Orangeburg County and the south-central portion of Richland County.

Between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain fell, according to the National Weather Service.

Locations where flash flooding is expected include: Orangeburg, Brookdale, St. Matthews, Gaston, Sandy Run, Claflin College, South Carolina State University, Edisto Gardens, Congaree National Park, Orangeburg County Airport, Swansea, North, Woodford , Prince of Orange Mall , Edisto and Wilkinson Heights.

Flooding is also expected on portions of Interstate 26 between mile markers 123 and 149.

Hello, a few rays of sunshine will raise the maximum temperatures to around 80 degrees. Our next round of rain begins shortly before sunset. As the showers become heavier and more numerous tonight, we have issued a First alert weather day.

Three elements work together to provide this abundance of moisture tonight and Thursday. Thanks to an approaching cold front, landward currents from the Atlantic and Rafael's moisture from the Gulf will be channeled into the Midlands.

This heavy rainfall will result in rainfall amounts of 2 to 5 inches across parts of the Midlands. The highest amounts of precipitation will occur throughout the CSRA.

On Friday the front boundary moved into the sea in our direction. This will reduce our chance of rain, although an isolated shower or two over the weekend cannot be ruled out. High temperatures will drop below 70°C.

Today: After a foggy morning there will be sunshine until this afternoon. There will be showers late in the day. Chance of rain 50%. Highs near 80 degrees.

(First Alert Weather Day) Thursday: It rains heavily at times, especially in the morning. Chance of rain 80%. Highs in the mid-70s.

Friday: There is sunshine all day long. An isolated shower cannot be ruled out. Highs in the mid-70s.

Saturday: Partly to mostly cloudy. Slight chance of a rain shower. Highs in the low 70s.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy skies. Slight chance of a rain shower. Highs in the low 70s.
